While sailing along the east coast of the Arctic Circle, we encountered countless icebergs. The big ones were relatively easy to spot on radar, and during the day, they were hard to miss.
But the real hazard wasn’t always the iceberg itself—it was the calving.
Large chunks of ice would break away and float behind the main iceberg, sometimes drifting for miles. These smaller pieces were much harder to see on radar and could be nearly impossible to spot in the darkness.
That made nighttime sailing through iceberg territory especially tricky. 🌙🧊
You could see the giant berg ahead of you… but you never knew what pieces of it might be hiding in the water behind it.
