Around the
Americas:
One Island, One
Ocean, a sailing &
science expedition
Who we are
Around the Americas Expedition—a 14-month sailing voyage that began in May 2025 to circumnavigate North and South America aboard the 48-foot sailboat One Ocean. The mission extends far beyond the voyage itself! It is an education-focused expedition dedicated to transforming open-sourced ocean research into accessible, curriculum-linked learning for students of all ages. The program bridges inequities in STEM and environmental education by bringing real scientific data, live ship-to-classroom interactions, and teacher-ready resources directly to learners and educators all over the world.
The expedition integrates scientific research, education, and community outreach to raise awareness about ocean health. Building on Captain Mark Schrader’s original 2009–2010 27,000 nautical mile journey around the Americas, this expedition will examine and compare changes in ocean conditions over the past 15 years.
