Changing plans on One Ocean
BIG update from One Ocean‼️⛵️
The One Ocean crew is currently in Saint Croix, USVI. This was not a planned stop, but weather decided for us. Our original plan was to go offshore for about 5 weeks to Uruguay- but after departing from Puerto Rico, plans quickly changed. We decided to give it a go from Culebra Island, but if we continued on our planned route, we would be bashing into weather for weeks. Our plan now is to go the through the Panama Canal- we will decide from there which direction to go. There are many factors we take into account when making these decisions including weather, timing, and budget. Thank you all for the support and if you were looking at our tracker confused, now you know why!

About us:
The Around the Americas Expedition aims to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards by integrating ocean research, exploration, and interactive engagement. The expedition includes over 50 scheduled stops across 12 countries, fostering community discussions about the health of our oceans. Our onboard research will include the first ever pole-to-pole kelp study, atmospheric and seawater property studies to help better understand ocean surface temperature or the ‘cool skin effect’ happening in our one ocean. All our research will be open-sourced and shared on an education platform - Exploring By The Seat of Your Pants. The 2025-26 expedition will highlight the importance of education to motivate students of all ages to become future ocean stewards!
The Around the Americas Expedition is a 14-month voyage, starting in May 2025, that will circumnavigate North and South America aboard the 48-foot sailboat, One Ocean.
The mission focuses on scientific research, education, and community outreach to raise awareness about ocean health. Building on Captain Mark Schrader’s original 2009–2010 journey, the expedition will compare oceanic changes over the past 15 years.
One of the key projects involves researching kelp forests along the coastlines of North and South America, documenting their health and dynamics. Collaborators include the University of Victoria, UCLA, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the University of Washington.
Research Highlights:
The scientific focus includes:
Kelp forest dynamics: Spatial distribution, density, and temporal studies.
Environmental monitoring: Ocean temperature and related factors.
Meteorological studies: Ocean-atmosphere interactions.
Conservation efforts: Utilizing low-impact marine technologies.
