The Maiden of Deception Pass 🪸

One Ocean will depart from Samish territory in Anacortes, Washington, to study bull and giant kelp. The legend of The Maiden of Deception Pass comes from the Samish people. The Samish tribe believes that the blades of bull kelp seen floating in the water at Deception Pass, Anacortes, are the maiden’s hair swaying with the current. This story is of a Samish woman named Ko-kwal-alwoot who marries a sea creature to provide abundant seafood for her tribe. She now lives as a guardian spirit of the sea, watching over the waters near Deception Pass.

You can visit the statue of The Maiden of Deception Pass at Deception Pass State Park, where she watches over the Samish people.
