Puerto Williams

Wednesday, March 4, One Ocean is anchored in the bay outside Puerto Williams. It's a clear, cold morning, sunlight glowing off the surrounding mountain peaks. I sat drinking my coffee studying the clouds race in from the west and wondered what conditions were building beyond the shelter of our bay. Soon, we will find out.

Later this week — weather dependent — we plan to depart for Cape Horn.

The journey is approximately 140 miles round trip, but it may be some of the most significant miles of our entire expedition. Already, it feels like a turning point. After the Horn, we point our bow north.

The Around the Americas Expedition, a 27,000-nautical-mile voyage dedicated to ocean research and conservation, is approaching one of sailing’s most legendary milestones: rounding Cape Horn.

Aboard the 48-foot ketch One Ocean, we are preparing to navigate what is often called the “Everest of Sailing.” At the southernmost tip of South America, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans converge, this passage is notorious for gale-force winds and massive swells.

“Cape Horn is a place of deep historical significance and immense physical challenge,” says Captain Mark Schrader. “Rounding the Horn isn’t just a maritime achievement; it’s about documenting the health of these extreme environments. This region is a vital engine of our planet’s climate system, and we are here to bear witness to its changes.”

In Case You Missed It

We recently hosted an inspiring class focused on pathways into blue-water industries — highlighting how scientists, sailors, engineers, innovators, and environmental leaders build careers working with and for the ocean. Students explored real-world opportunities and learned how they, too, can make waves in the blue economy.

Upcoming Class – Tuesday, March 10, 12 PM EDT

The Around the Americas Expedition invites you to join our next live classroom session featuring Hannah Horsfield, Program Coordinator at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

Hannah holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geography from Cardiff University and will be speaking about critical environmental issues, including marine plastic pollution.

While in Bermuda, our crew had the opportunity to tour BUEI and witness firsthand their exceptional research and education outreach. BUEI’s mission is to nurture an appreciation for the ocean surrounding Bermuda through education, exploration, and immersive experiences — a mission that aligns beautifully with our own.

We are thrilled to reconnect with Hannah and share this important conversation with you.

Register early — and encourage your students to bring questions for both Hannah and the crew!

As we prepare to round Cape Horn, follow our social media channels for live updates and departure timing.

Here we go.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
