The One Ocean expedition is all about science, education, and connection- one of our most important goals being to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.
When we were first pondering how to maximize our outreach, we came across Exploring By The Seat of Your Pants. Not only is it an enticing title, but after digging deeper- into their mission to connect schools with scientists, explorers, and conservationists for free- we were instantly on board. Their values aligned perfectly with ours.
Founded in 2015 by educator, communicator of science, scuba diver, and National Geographic explorer, Joe Gabrowski, Exploring By The Seat Of Your Pants has opened up countless windows into the world of exploration. As we have gotten to know Joe and develop a partnership, our enthusiasm has only grown. This collaboration has enhanced our ability to connect with students worldwide.
To wrap up our first month at sea, we hosted our first live classroom event!
This live classroom was an introduction of the crew, boat, overview of the expedition- and most excitingly, connected us with classrooms around the world. Schools joined from Nova Scotia, South Carolina, Quebec, and back home in Skagit County Washington (shout out Burlington Edison!). The live stream filled up with inquisitive students with insightful questions. What food do you eat? How do you deal with hurricane season? Tell us more about your kelp research!

For 45 interactive minutes, we answered questions, shared stories, and gave students a glimpse of science at sea. The excitement of these bright eyed students was infectious- reminding us why we do this work. Huge thank you to Exploring By the Seat of Your Pants for helping us connect with classrooms everywhere, even when we’re out at sea. I think it’s safe to say that we have sparked the interest of the next ocean stewards- and this is only the beginning.
The Around the Americas Crew will also be stopping at 50+ ports along our route, so if you're on our path and interested, reach out for a free presentation in your school or community!
Let's connect soon!
